Police Chief Mutchler sets retirement date
Cuero Police Chief Glenn Mutchler has announced plans to retire at the end of this month after serving in that capacity here for the past seven years.
In a letter to Cuero Interim City Manager Marie Gelles last week, Mutchler said he would retire effective July 31.
In August Mutchler will become a special investigator with Texas Department of Family and Protective Services in Victoria.
With 31 years experience in law enforcement, he said he has been looking at a career move. “I have been looking at what would be best if I found a job I wanted to do. With my retirement and the new position, I will come out ahead and Child Protective Services has always been a passion of mine,” Mutchler said.
Appointed chief of the Cuero Police in 2001, he said his early goals included making department proactive in reducing crime; increase training and capabilities of the officers, and target drug dealers and gang activity here.
His retirement announcement noted the crime rate in Cuero has dropped from crimes in 2000 to 240 in 2007. He said the department has arrested over 100 drug users and dealers and more than 50 gang members over the past five years.
“I began to work on amending and updating the goals for Cuero Police Department,” Mutchler said. “During this process I began to focus on some personal goals that I have had for a long time, as I reviewed these goals, and the need to address them, it became obvious that I will not be able to achieve those goals in my current position as chief of police.”
He added, “I have enjoyed the past 31 years and will cherish the many friends I have made during that time. Some of those friends are no longer with us, some killed in the line of duty, others by natural causes, all of whom I truly miss. The past 13 years, serving the community of Cuero, have been some of the best years of my law enforcement career.”
Mutchler listed the officers and staff of his department for their support in helping reach the goals of the last seven years. The list included Lt. Chris Hernandez, Sgt. Curtis Fee, Sgt. Steven Ellis, Sgt. Sam Saunders, School Resource Officer Liza Trujillo, Patrol Officer James Timpone, Patrol Officer Sam Jones, Officer Charles Barfield, Jr., Clerk Sharon Adams and Court Clerk Kathleen Hernandez.
“I also must thank all members of the community who have helped and supported the Cuero Police Department regularly. The police department is only as good as the community helps us to be,” he said.
Mutchler and his family will continue to live in Cuero.
