Wednesday, August 27, 2008 8:21 AM CDT
The Cuero Gobblers return to the field this Friday night, and begin their run for a state championship against the Beeville Trojans.
All of the Gobbler's preseason opponents were playoff teams a year ago, and the Trojans were a quarterfinalist in Class 4A posting an 11-3 record. Expectations for the Beeville Trojans will be high as head coach Chris Soza enters his fifth season with the team.
Trojan quarterback Eric Soza, District 30 4A offensive player of the year two years running, will be directing the offense again this season. Soza is entering his fourth year as a starter, and after throwing for 2,872 yards and 29 touchdowns, will look forward to another explosive year with seven offensive starters returning. The offensive line will be have all-district selections, Justin Pena and D.J. Richey, returning this year.
The defense will be tough as well with defensive tackle Robbie Horton (78 tackles, 7 sacks), defensive tackle Ben Castro, linebacker Thomas Smith, and defensive back Matt Botello leading the way for the Trojans. Running back/defensive back Frank Warner will start on both sides of the ball.
Due to field conditions in Beeville, the freshmen and junior varisty Gobblers will play their games in Cuero on Thursday evening.
