County wants to hold tax at current level

DeWitt County Commissioners Court had their first look at what the property tax rate may be for the new budget year at a meeting Monday morning.
Dramatic increases in the mineral values from Eagle Ford Shale discovery and production continues to drive total values upward. The newest numbers indicate total taxable values will be about $5.5 billion. That is up over $3 billion from the current budget year.
As County Judge Daryl Fowler explained to court members, this year oil and gas values provided 72% of the county’s tax revenue. In the coming year, it will provide 87%. He said that is almost 9¢ of every tax dollar received.
