Gobblers handed new district rivals by UIL, tough pre-district schedule set

With football Spring practices just around the corner, the Gobblers schedule has a few changes from last year. University Interscholastic League realignment on Monday has once again had an impact on the Gobblers as well as the rest of district 28-3A.
Being a perrennial powerhouse is not always easy. The Gobblers compiled an astounding 84-11 with Coach Mark Reeve at the helm, making it tough to schedule games early in season. This year under first year Head Coach Rick Owens is no different, as is indicated in the Gobblers non-district schedule which looks more like a rough playoff run then a pre-district warmup.
The Cuero Gobblers first opportunity to put on the pads against someone outside of practice will come on August 14, when Cuero will scrimmage Lockhart. Five days later, the Gobblers will scrimmage the LaGrange Leopards on August 19.
UIL realignment, kept the Gobblers in District 28-3A, but the district was shuffled from a five team district to a seven team district. This allows for only three pre-district games on the 2010 schedule.
Kicking off the regular season, the Gobblers will battle the Wimberley Texans. The Texans finished the 2009 season with a 9-5 record, and were eliminated from the DII playoffs in a loss to title contender Graham.
Week one brings on the Liberty Hill Panthers. Liberty Hill is coming off a rough 4-5 season, but the back to back state champs from ‘06 and ‘07 will certainly give the Gobblers all they can handle in this pre-season showdown.
Week two does not bring Cuero one minute of rest, as the Gobblers are set to battle the Bellville Brahmas. After a top ten pre-season ranking last year, the Brahmas finished the season with a dissapointing 6-4 record.
Week three finds the Gobblers in a long awaited showdown with the Port Lavaca Sand Crabs. Calhoun wrapped up last season with a 10-4 record, which included a deep playoff run. This much anticipated regional showdown will wrap up the Gobblers pre-season schedule.
The UIL’s biennial realingment has done a number on District 28-3A. Familiar foes: Goliad, Palacios, and Edna are now in new districts, while the Gobblers remain. A five team district for the previous two years, the Gobblers now find themselves in a seven team district. Cuero’s new district rivals include two familiar faces in Gonzales and Yoakum, but new faces are making an appearance. New to District 28-3A is LaVernia, Pleasanton, Poteet, and San Antonio Sam Houston.
“I think our district is good. We keep some of our old rivals, (Yoakum/Gonzales), and we get to see some new folks (Pleasanton, Poteet). We will still play La Vernia, and we have a rematch of our bi-district game with San Antonio Sam Houston,” said Head Coach Rick Owens. “My biggest concern is the travel, as Poteet and Pleasanton will be a long haul, especially on a week day.”
The Gobblers and LaVernia Bears have played for the past two seasons, and split the contests. Last year’s Bear’s finished the season with a 7-4 record and a loss to Yoakum in the playoffs.
Pleasonton comes into this competetive district off of a 3-7 season and will find it difficult in a district with four playoff teams from a year ago.
The Poteet Aggies are coming off of a 4-5 season and much like the Eagles of Pleasanton, will find this district no easier then their last.
Wrapping up the new district 28-3A is the San Antonio Sam Houston Hurricanes. The Hurricanes are coming off of a solid season, which included a playoff appearance. The Hurricanes playoff run was ended in the first round at the hands of the Cuero Gobblers.
