Livestock Show tops $298,000

Cuero Livestock Show completed its 61st annual awards show and auction Friday night with buyers contributing almost $300,000 to DeWitt County youngsters.
There were 136 projects and 13 pens of Commercial Heifers sold at this year’s auction and buyers spent $298,635 topping last year by over $23,000. The total included $255,085 spent on the projects and $43,550 on the heifer auction.
This year’s auction compares to last year’s totals that saw $226,887 spent on 127 animal projects and another $48,500 on 43 head in the Commercial Heifer auction.
Helping boost this year’s auction success was another $13,810 from individuals and syndicates in the form of add-ons following the completion of the auction. Also Stiles Cattle Co. Clint and Don Stiles, Jr. donated $4,100 to the animal projects that did not sell at auction.
It was the fifth consecutive year for a member of the Kelly family took top honors in the steer competition held Thursday night.
This year’s champion projects were brought to the ring first and buyers were asked to bid on the animal instead of the usual per-pound price.

Emily June Kelley of Arneckeville 4-H had the Reserve Champion Market Steer that sold for $6,000 to Geo Southern Energy and Petrohawk.
Brittny Bernier of Cuero Jr. FFA received the Grand Champion Market Swine banner and sold the animal for $2,750 to Bohman Clinic Partner.
Maddie Bryand of Yorktown 4-H had the Reserve Champion Market Swine and it sold for $2,500 to Yorktown 4-H Supporters.
Jessa Lee of Cuero FFA had the Grand Champion Market Lamb and sold it for $3,500 to Bohman Clinic Partner.
Krystan Saunders of Yorktown 4-H received the Reserve Champion Market Lamb banner and sold her lamb for $3,250 to Geo Southern Energy and Petrohawk.
Amanda Denson of Arneckeville 4-H earned the Grand Champion Meat Goat that sold for $2,800 to Top Bidders.
Clara Kelly of Lone Star 4-H had the Reserve Champion Meat Goat and sold it for $2,300 to Shoestring Syndicate.
Matti Lynn Wendel of Arneckeville 4-H received the Grand Champion Market Broiler banner and her project sold for $2,100 to Geo Southern Energy and Petrohawk.
Garrett West of Cuero FFA had the Reserve Champion Market Broilers and sold them for $2,100 to Cuero Proud Crowd.
Chelsea Fuchs of Arneckeville 4-H won the Grand Champion Market Rabbits banner and sold them for $2,000 to Cuero Rotary Club.
Travis Young of Cuero Jr. FFA had the Reserve Champion Market Rabbits and sold them for $1,500 to Freund Funeral Home.
