Murder charges follow shooting
 (Posted 3/3/2010 08:52 am)
Four people were arrested here late Friday in connection with a murder of a 26-year-old Cuero man that night.
Cuero Police Department reports Isaac Gamez was shot and killed following a fight in west Cuero.
A call to the dispatcher’s office at about 9 p.m. Friday indicated there had been a shooting in the 200 block of Togo Street. Cuero EMS and police responded to the call and attempted to revive Gamez with CPR. However, the victim was pronounced dead shortly after he was taken to Cuero Community Hospital.
Cuero Police Chief Chris Hernandez said the investigation revealed there had been a fight prior to the fatal shooting. He also said Gamez had been shot once in the chest area.
Officers learned where suspects in the shooting were located. Marquis Headley, 18, of Cuero was located at the Oaks Apartments here. Javance Lee Thomas, 20, of Cuero later turned himself in at DeWitt County Sheriff’s Office. The two were charged with murder and their bonds were set at $250,000 each.
Additional information had officers searching for two more suspects in the neighborhood of Clarence and Alonzo Streets. Although Michael Villarreal, 21, of Cuero attempted to run from the police he was captured and arrested. He was charged with multiple outstanding felony and misdemeanor warrants, evading arrest, unlawfully carrying a weapon, and manufacturing-delivery of a controlled substance.
Police also arrested Justin Mathis, 20, of Cuero and he was charged with possession of marijuana (less than 2 ounces) and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon.
Hernandez said the arrests also resulted in police finding two handguns and 8.3 grams of crack cocaine.
In a statement released Monday by Chief Hernandez, he said within three hours of the initial call, law enforcement officers had four subjects in custody. He said Thomas and Headley are believed to be directly involved in the shooting.
He indicated there may be more arrests as a result of the fight which the officers indicated was an ongoing feud.
Assisting in the investigation and arrests were officers from Cuero Police Department, DeWitt County Sheriff’s Office, Department of Public Safety, and Yorktown Police Chief Paul Campos.
The last murder investigation in Cuero was recorded in 2007.
